The Fine Points of Godmodding « Thread Started on Jul 10, 2009, 8:23pm »
So we emulate what we see, at least I do, at posting boards. I have recently tried a new posting technique to help me with making my posts longer, I am trying many different things but this one has been brought to my attention. Of course if I am in the wrong I shall gladly repost and take my punishment. *lol*
However, for the newbies, I just want to clear up a few points that I am terribly confused on - so that they can read this and no what to do and not what to do. But, its mostly for me.
Okay, so here is the rule.
No Godmodding! This means you can not play as another character. You can not say what another character thinks, says, or does. You can only act for yourself.
Okay, I get that. Here are my questions...
If a character has posted, and I must give a reaction, is quoting the post of said character godmodding when it has all ready been written? This being used to make it clear as to who I am replying to if there are several posts in between.
example
Catwoman posts Captain Hector Barbossa post Catwoman Posts Raoul Duke Posts George Jung Posts Raould Duke Posts Catwoman "quotes" Hector's last posts and then gives her reaction.
In theory, wouldn't that be easier so that people know where they are?
Okay, My newest technique is copy/paste and then putting that characters post in yellow, and giving my responce. The thing to this is the way I write. I am a writer, I have one book published, and I just figured that conversations (at least between my two characters) could be less chopy if I do that. That means a direct questions which needs a direct answer could be copy pasted and coloured and then in the normal colour I could reply right away.
I guess it might just be my writer side of things. Anyway, any feedback would be appreciative and if this is very distracting, I'll change it. But, is it really godmodding if it has all ready been written?

Okay. Yes, you can quote something if a character already said it before you, but I think once you start copying and pasting big blocks of text from previous posts its a problem, because it's repetitive and a bit irritating to see the same thing over and over in general, lets just be honest, and I don't mean this to you directly. If anyone was quoting blocks of text I'd be like, what the fuck? But don't worry...I had my share of godmodding blunders and it took me a little bit to get used to. I understand what you're trying to do, keep your place and clearly show your place, but it's just better to quote a line or two and leave it at that.
I understand that as you're a writer you might see this different, I did too, but RPing is different from writing a book. It's a format you just have to get used to.

Okay, that makes sence. So I'll quit with the copy/paste thing. I wanted to explain my reasoning so that I could get some good feedback on this. Yes, I do know that it isn't like writing, I figured that was just me *lol*

Okay... here to clear the air.
Yes... keep copying things small even when using the "quote" function on the site. It doesn't matter how long ago someone said something (as long as its not on page 2 and you're on page 7.)
Repeating isn't god modding. I too write novels (didn't know you did... we need to talk lol) and am working with a very arrogant publisher now lol. I found RP hard at the beginning but a VERY good exercise when it came to my writing. Another way to get out of quoting is to do something like the example below taken from you.
Catwoman says: When hector took off his hat.... catwoman blah blah.
You don't NEED to quote but feel free.
The difference between that and godmodding is as follows.
Hector says: Barbossa took off his hat.
Catwoman says: When hector took off his hat and scoffed he walked up to her to which she replied.
