First time I saw it I was a bit confused by what was going on. But I watched it again and then things started to click into place and I began to see there was a lot more to it than I first thought. Now everytime I see it I notice something new. I'm going to start reading the book right away, I just picked a copy from the library.

Not sure if you are all in areas that have discounted books, but I picked up a copy of Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas along with a couple others of HST's work at a discounted book store. Seems to be a good possibility of finding his stuff at such places.
And yes, the movie can take a few viewings. Fortunately, I had already been groomed on the works of William Burroughs, Timothy Leary, etc., etc., so I did not have much trouble keeping up with the goings-on (I saw the movie before reading the book). However, I have watched it many times, and I do find new things or new interpretations, layers, reactions, etc., etc.
